VIOLACIONES DE DERECHOS HUMANOS EN WAL-MART MÉXICO

Hace un par de días me llamaron de Democracy Now quesque para una entrevista. El chango que me contactó me hizo preguntas francamente muy mamilas; que si como se sentía la gente por el fallo del TRIFE, que si que significa, etc. Pendejadas francamente poco relevantes. ¿Cómo se siente la gente? Encabronada pero decidida a seguir dando pelea. ¿Qué significa? Que fecal no podrá gobernar, etc.

Pero luego salió algo que me dejó muy sorprendido. Los de Democracy Now no sabían que Wal-Mart, al igual que otras empresas en México, habían amenazado a sus empleados con despidos masivos o de plano con cerrar tiendas en México si ganaba el peje. Uta, pues buenos periodistas salieron estos gringuitos.

Nadamás por eso, Wal-Mart merece ser boicoteada. Pero si quieren más motivos, esto que sigue es un motivo excelente. Se trata de un artículo que aparece en la prensa europea en el que se detalla de como inversionistas europeos retiraron sus inversiones de Wal-Mart México por haber encontrado flagrantes violaciones a derechos humanos:

Swedish pension fund pulls out of Wal-Mart Mexico, cites human rights concerns

LONDON (Thomson IM) - The 195 bln skr Swedish second national pension buffer fund, AP2, has withdrawn its bond and equities investments in Wal-Mart Mexico, claiming the firm breaches human rights.

The Swedish fund's move follows the Norwegian Government Pension Fund's decision to end its investments in the retailer in June, also citing employee rights concerns at the world's largest retailer.

'Dating from 2003, the Second AP Fund has written letters, exercised its voting rights at AGMs and participated in an investor group to influence the company, but the company has failed to indicate any change in its attitude to employee rights,' AP2 said in a statement.

The fund cited evidence gathered by the Norwegian Council on Ethics, which acts as an advisor to the Norwegian State Pension Fund.

According to the council's recommendation last November: 'An extensive body of material indicates that Wal-Mart consistently and systematically employs minors in contravention of international rules.'

The report also argued that working conditions at many of Wal-Mart suppliers were 'dangerous or health-hazardous.'

Eva Halvarsson, AP2's CEO, said: 'Wal-Mart has so many documented incidents concerning the infringement of norms, both within its own operations and throughout its supply chain that, in our opinion, the existence of an inherently unethical system is placed beyond all reasonable doubt.'

A grandes razgos, lo que dice este artículo es que después de una investigación realizada por inversionistas europeos, se encontró que que Wal-Mart México "consistente y sistemáticamente emplea a menores, contrario a los reglamentos internacionales" y que las condiciones laborales de los proveedores de Wal-Mart México son "peligrosas y presentan un peligro para la salud."

Así que si no se habían decidido a no volver a comprar nada en Wal-Mart, espero que con esto queden convencidos.

Una razón más para apoyar al peje en el 2006.
